Our Morellos sour cherry trees were planted after many requests from visitors to the orchard. I’m so glad we did! I am really loving the morello sour cherries and the many uses for them.
A very different fruit, super sour, packed with flavour and goodness and oh so pretty. If you know, you know… some customers are very excited by the morellos, and now I understand why.
I am fascinated by this fruit and how special it is in many different cultures. I love hearing the many different recipes and uses that our sour cherry customers have. It has me wondering why this special fruit is not something we usually see in Australia. I suspect it’s because they are too delicate for the mainstream supply chains.
We’ve had them fresh with cheese. After a long hot day we muddled them in cold water for a very refreshing, hydrating drink.
Some recipe ideas shared with us are:

- Sour cherry licquer – into sugar and spirit, may be fermented a little first
- Jam – these really are best for jam
- Fruit leather or paste of sour cherry with salt
- Greek Sour cherry spoon sweet – Vyssino Glyko Koutaliou for icecream
